"The Nominal Theory of Empty Names" Abstract: Ordinary use of empty names encloses a variety of different phenomena. These include issues in semantics, mental content, fiction, pretense, and linguistic practice. In this paper I offer a novel accountof empty names, the nominal theory, and show how it delivers a more satisfactory account of the phenomena than the theories available in the literature. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of issues in metaphysics and psychological explanation. |
