This book defends a neopragmatist conception of logic as a situated, revisable, and publicly governed normative technology. Against the image of logic as an ahistorical canon or an ontological mirror of reality, it argues that inferential norms emerge from concrete practices and return to them in a movement of normative spiral: uses generate rules; rules discipline uses; and such discipline, under pressure from cases and conflicts, is revised again. Chapter 1 reconstructs inferentialism and logical expressivism, showing how logical connectives and rules do not describe facts but rather make explicit permissions, prohibitions, and incompatibilities already operative in competent use. In doing so, it challenges intellectualist views that restrict rationality to propositional language. Chapter 2 develops a methodology of normative governance based on the combination of reflective equilibrium and metalinguistic negotiation. This articulation allows for the revision of logical principles without dogmatism or arbitrariness, responding to Agrippa’s trilemma and dissolving the Quinean predicament. Chapter 3 integrates this framework into an ecology of cognition, drawing on language games, Neurath’s boat, and inferential niche construction. It introduces the notions of inferential affordances, normative skills, and grammatical sovereignty to explain the plurality of logics as disciplined adaptations to distinct environments. Logic thus appears as a public practice of rational self-governance, in which discipline and freedom are mutually enabling conditions.
